Class 2

Autumn term

LITERACY

We will be learning to read and spell words with long vowel digraphs, i.e.: ‘ee’. ‘ea’, ‘oa’, ‘o-e’, ‘ow’, ‘ai’, ‘a-e’, ‘ay’, ‘ie’, ‘igh’, ‘y’, ‘oo’, ‘u-e’, ‘ew’, ‘ue’, ‘oo’ (as in good).  At the beginning of each week the children will be given spellings to learn, these will be tested on Friday.  We will be investigating the use of capital letters, commas and exclamation marks and using them in our writing.  We will also try to make our writing more interesting by using connectives, such as suddenly, unfortunately, luckily, etc.  Our text work will be based on fiction and poetry, with familiar settings and we will use non-fiction to look at instructions.  Good letter formation is a priority, with Year 2 children practising a cursive style.  Children are invited to take home their home reading book, together with any comments about their reading.  Mrs Vincent helps them to change their library books on Thursday.

NUMERACY

Children are becoming familiar with reading and writing numbers up to 20 (Year 1) and 100 (Year 2). They will count on in ones, twos, fives and tens.  They will practise recording in number sentences, using +, - and = (Year 1) and x and division (Year 2).  They will learn to recall pairs of numbers that total 10 (year 1) and 20 (Year 2) and addition doubles to at least 5+5 (Year 1) and 10+10 (Year 2) together with corresponding halves.  Year 2 children will become familiar with multiplication facts of the x10 and x2 tables and deduce corresponding division facts.  They will recognise odd and even number.  We will also be looking at: length, 2D and 3D shapes, time, money and position and the associated vocabulary.  We will recognise halves and quarters and investigate maths problems and puzzles.  We will look at ways of handling data, including bar charts and Venn diagrams.

SCIENCE

We shall be studying how we use our senses.

HISTORY

Our topic is Famous Events – we shall be finding out about Remembrance Day and The Gunpowder Plot.

GEOGRAPHY

We are investigating living on an island and comparing and contrasting it with living on the mainland.

R.E.

This will be an integral part of our R.E. project, investigating belonging to communities.

SPRING TERM

LITERACY

We will be learning to read and spell words with long vowel digraphs, i.e.: ‘air’, ‘ere’, ‘are’, ‘ear’, ‘oor’, ‘aw’, ‘au’, ‘ore’, ‘er’, ‘ur’, ‘ir’; blends, e.g. ‘wh’, ‘ch’ and ‘ph’; prefixes, e.g. ‘un’, ‘re’ and ‘dis’; antonyms, e.g. pretty and ugly, cheap and expensive; compound words, e.g. playtime, homework and icepack.  We will learn to count syllables and phonemes.  The reading and spelling of high frequency words is an ongoing priority.  At the beginning of each week the children will be given spellings to learn, these will be tested on Friday.  We will be investigating the use of commas and speech marks and using them in our writing.  We will also try to make our writing more interesting by using connectives, such as suddenly, unfortunately, luckily, etc.  We will be looking at grammatical agreement and using the standard form of verbs.  Our text work will be based on fiction and poetry, by significant authors and we will use non-fiction to look at instructions.  Good letter formation is a priority, with Year 2 children practising a cursives style and Year 1 children learning the correct orientation of the letters and the cursive joining “tick”.  The children will be looking at different ways of presenting their work, including using word processing.  Writing is encouraged and practised at every opportunity and this term we will be focussing on the structure of a story and key elements, such as setting, character, the use of adjectives, alliteration and onomatopoeia.  Children are invited to take home a home reading book as often as they wish – please fill in the title and date in their home reading book, together with any comments about their reading.  Mrs. Vincent helps them to change their library book on Thursday.

ICT

ICT covered during the year for class 2

Autumn term

The children worked on Word processing and used a piece of work they had done in class called “Myself”  In this piece of work they practised their typing skills, changing of the font style and colour and also inserting a picture and giving that picture a border.

After this piece of work the children worked on “The Nativity Story”.  With this they had to retell the Nativity Story in their own words using their word processing skills.

Spring term

During this term the children worked with a completely new programme for the school, called 2 Simple 2 Paint.  They tried out a lot of different techniques of painting in this programme.  At the end of the term we put all the techniques together and made a painting of “The Great Fire of London”.

Summer term

During the summer term the children worked with the Robot called Roamer.  This is their introduction to control technology on which they will build in the higher classes in the school.

All children learnt how to control the robot making it move around the school hall.

ICT covered during the year for class 3

Autumn Term

The children learnt new word processing skills.

To format the font they were using, copy and paste, delete and insert, find and replace and using the spell checker. They also learnt how to insert a picture, either from a CD ROM, through clipart or from the internet, which they then learnt to manipulate and put in the correct position in their work.

Towards the end of the term they learnt to work in the completely new programme called Textease and they made a Christmas poem.

Spring Term

The children learnt how to make a branching data base and how a normal database works.  The textease programme was used to make the branching database and the information used was linked to the Geography lessons in class which was on mountains from around the world.  To make the database interesting the children were also able to insert pictures into the database making them quite colourful.

To understand how a database works the children played a game in which they were the database and they has to answer questions to eliminate and sort out the data.  They also started setting up their own working database again with information from the Geography lessons from class.

Summer term

The children learnt to insert shapes into Word and to manipulate, colour, copy and paste and make them into a pattern.

These shapes were then going to be used as a frame around a picture which they had taken themselves with the school camera.

ICT covered during the year for class 4

Autumn Term

The children did a basic introduction to Spreadsheets during this term.  This involved using formulae to do calculations such as addition, subtraction and multiplication, using cell reference, formatting cells, learning different shortcuts like copying and pasting formulae and also filling in formulae.

Spring Term

The children did control technology and for this they used a new programme called Text ease and controlled a “Turtle” on the screen.  They made different shapes and learnt that you can use different commands to make quite intricate pictures with basic shapes.

Summer Term

The children did Word processing and inserting pictures into their work and manipulating those pictures to make them right for their piece of work.  For this they had to find information on the internet to use in their work. This they had to copy and paste to use at a later date.  This also helps towards teaching them to read information on a computer screen.

ICT covered during the year for class 5

Autumn Term

During the Autumn Term the children from class 5 worked on spreadsheets.  This involved using formulae to do calculations such as addition, subtraction and multiplication, using cell reference, formatting cells, learning different shortcuts like copying and pasting formulae and also filling in formulae.  They also learnt how to make graphs from the spreadsheets and also how to make the graphs look more interesting using colours and also pictures which they inserted into the graphs.  They also learnt that not all graphs are appropriate for all data and to make an informed choice on what graph to use.

Spring term

The children worked on control technology and for this they used a programme called Robolab.  This is designed by Lego and in it the children learnt how to write programmes both on a lower (Pilot) and higher (Inventor) level.  In the Pilot level they learnt how to substitute items in both input and output ports and to insert new steps into programmes.  In the inventor level they also learnt how to substitute, but also learnt how to write the programme and wire the programme together.

Summer term

The children worked on several word processing skills like inserting tables and formatting them to suit the needs of the data which would be put into the table, f.e. merging cells and changing the text direction as well as the general formatting of the cells.  They also worked on a transition project in Power Point which was based on themselves and this project will go to the new schools the Year 6 children will be going to.
