History

Intent

Our aim for History  is to encourage all children to develop an understanding and curiosity of the past and the present and to have an insight into how both impact our future. We provide a varied history curriculum which focuses on inspiring our pupils’ fascination about Britain’s past and the wider world.

We encourage our children to ask perceptive questions, to develop critical thinking and to weigh available evidence, analysing with open minds.

These skills enable our children to develop their judgement and perspective both as historians and as citizens of the world.

Our history curriculum covers the skills, knowledge and understanding set out in the National Curriculum 2014.

Implementation

The National Curriculum states that ‘a high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.’

Our history curriculum is organised into a two-year rolling programme, year A and year B.  Content knowledge, key concepts and progressive vocabulary is then planned for at a greater level of detail in short term plans to ensure that pupils build on secure prior knowledge. Content knowledge, key questions and progressive vocabulary is then planned for at a greater level of detail in short term plans.

History is delivered through subject specific teaching to allow for clear progression from EYFS through to Year Six.

Within class, staff model subject specific vocabulary, knowledge and skills relevant to the learning to allow them to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts. History assessment is ongoing throughout the unit of work to inform teachers with their planning and inclusion. Throughout each lesson, children secure their understanding through high quality teaching as well as regular class discussions. Children learn to apply their historical understanding and skills through well thought-out, effective and engaging outcome opportunities.

Impact

Our history curriculum ensures that pupils have a thorough understanding of historical concepts, knowledge, skills and vocabulary, developing a secure understanding of people, events and contexts from specific historical periods. They will have developed the ability to think critically about history and communicate their thoughts and ideas confidently, culminating in enthusiastic and confident historians with a thirst for historical knowledge.
