At Elham School, the intent of the French (MFL) curriculum is to inspire curiosity and a positive attitude towards language learning while developing pupils’ confidence and faith in their own ability to succeed. We aim to provide a high-quality language education that supports achievement and fosters an understanding of the French language and culture, laying strong foundations for further language learning at secondary school. Through engaging and age-appropriate lessons, pupils develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills alongside key grammatical knowledge, enabling them to communicate meaningfully beyond their immediate environment. Our curriculum promotes empathy, inclusivity and cultural awareness, helping pupils understand their role within local, national and global communities and recognise the importance of language in building connections, mutual respect and understanding across cultures.
French is taught using the Language Angels scheme of work, which provides a progressive and structured approach to language learning. In Key Stage 2, pupils in Years 3–6 follow a two-year rolling programme to ensure continuity, progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with grammar introduced and revisited in a clear and age-appropriate way. Language Angels’ units support teachers with high-quality resources, including interactive activities, songs, stories and assessment tools, enabling consistent delivery across the school.
In Key Stage 1, pupils are introduced to French through informal and engaging activities such as singing songs, learning basic greetings and numbers, and responding to simple words and phrases. This early exposure develops pupils’ listening skills, confidence and enthusiasm for language learning, preparing them for more formal French lessons in Key Stage 2. Throughout the school, opportunities are provided for pupils to practise pronunciation, develop cultural awareness and use language in meaningful contexts.
The impact of our French (MFL) curriculum is that pupils develop a secure foundation in basic French language skills and are able to communicate ideas with increasing confidence and accuracy. They demonstrate enthusiasm for language learning, a willingness to participate in spoken activities, and an awareness of French culture and traditions. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are able to understand and respond to simple spoken and written French, write short sentences using familiar vocabulary, and apply basic grammar rules. This ensures they are well prepared for the transition to secondary education and equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to continue learning languages successfully.
