Curriculum Intent

At Elham C of E Primary School, through the teaching of high-quality education in Mathematics, children will be able to reason mathematically and have a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.  An essential skill for everyday life, mathematics provides a basis for understanding the world.

We aim to ensure that all children:

• Become fluent in the basics of mathematics, including varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problem solving over time, so that pupils are able to recall and apply their knowledge and use their skills rapidly and accurately.
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying patterns and relationships, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
• Can solve problems by applying mathematical skills learned to a variety of increasingly sophisticated problems, where several steps are needed to find a solution.

At Elham C of E Primary School, we follow White Rose Mathematics Scheme.  Adopting a White Rose Maths approach to teaching means that all children have the same opportunities to learn and fully grasp concepts as they progress through school.

Each year, from Foundation Stage through to Year 6, the scheme builds on prior knowledge and gradually enables children to develop a high level of skills with a systematic approach.
