PSHE and RSE
PSHE and RSE – Intent, Implementation and Impact
Elham Church of England Primary School
Intent
At Elham Church of England Primary School, our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum is designed to support pupils in becoming healthy, confident, respectful and responsible individuals. Rooted in our Christian values of faith, achievement, community and empathy, our curriculum promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepares them for life in modern Britain.
Our intent is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to:
Build positive, respectful and healthy relationships
Understand and manage their physical and emotional wellbeing
Develop a strong sense of identity, self-worth and resilience
Make informed, age-appropriate choices
Respect diversity and show empathy towards others
PSHE and RSE are delivered in line with statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education, ensuring content is age-appropriate, inclusive and sensitive. Teaching reflects the Church of England’s vision of enabling all pupils to flourish and live life in all its fullness, while recognising and respecting the beliefs, values and backgrounds of all families within our school community.
Implementation
PSHE and RSE are taught using the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE Scheme of Learning, which provides a coherent, spiral curriculum that builds knowledge, skills and understanding progressively from Early Years to Year 6.
The curriculum is organised into key strands, including:
Families and relationships
Health and wellbeing
Safety and the changing body (RSE)
Citizenship
Economic wellbeing
Lessons are taught in a safe, supportive and respectful environment where pupils are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and reflect thoughtfully. Clear ground rules are established to ensure discussions are handled sensitively and inclusively.
Our school values are embedded throughout:
Faith supports moral development, reflection and understanding of right and wrong.
Achievement is promoted through goal-setting, resilience and positive self-belief.
Community is developed through learning about belonging, democracy, respect and responsibility.
Empathy underpins learning about relationships, diversity, inclusion and emotional wellbeing.
RSE content is taught in an age-appropriate manner, focusing on relationships, respect, body awareness, personal safety and emotional changes, with statutory sex education taught in Year 6 in line with guidance and parental consultation. Parents are informed about RSE content and have the right to withdraw their child from non-statutory elements.
PSHE and RSE are further enhanced through collective worship, themed days, pupil voice opportunities and links to safeguarding and pastoral support.
Impact
As a result of our PSHE and RSE curriculum, pupils at Elham Church of England Primary School:
Show confidence in understanding themselves and managing their emotions
Form and maintain positive, respectful relationships
Demonstrate empathy, kindness and respect for diversity
Make informed choices that support their physical and mental health
Understand how to keep themselves and others safe
Pupils leave our school well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school. They are equipped with the personal, social and emotional skills needed to thrive as responsible members of their community, living out our Christian values in their daily lives.
